Christmas Recital
Saturday, December 14, 2019

Every December Mr. Nick hosts a Christmas Recital at Steinway & Sons Piano Gallery of Detroit in Commerce, MI. This recital is more formal than our Spring Showcase. Students are encouraged to dress up as they share all their hard work with the audience. Students are also encouraged to pick their own songs, that are meaningful to them. Songs are chosen that are within the students' skill level. Some younger students may be asked to do a couple songs since they tend to be shorter. An older student may be asked to do only one long song. You will definitely hear some Christmas music at this recital but, it is not a requirement for the student to pick a Christmas song. This recital lasts about two hours with a 5-minute intermission after the first hour. Tickets are $5 per person (not including Mr. Nick's students). It is recommended to purchase all tickets beforehand at Mr. Nick's studio. Mr. Nick's Christmas recital has been known to pack the house! Upwards of 200 people have been in the audience. We encourage family and friends to join us in celebrating the hard work these students put in to master their pieces but, purchasing tickets well ahead of time is key to making things run smoothly.

Spring Showcase
Saturday, June 29, 2019
Mr. Nick's Spring Showcase is the annual spring recital. This is also held at Steinway & Sons Piano Gallery of Detroit in Commerce, MI. The Spring Showcase is a little less formal than the Christmas Recital and students usually pick a new song to master. The Spring Showcase is roughly 2 hours long with a 5-minute intermission in between. Admission is $5 per person and it is highly recommended that tickets be purchased ahead of time.
Why Perform At Recital?
Piano recitals are an important part of a student's musical education. Learning to get in front of a crowd all on your own can be a daunting task. Although children may be nervous we recommend that they do both recitals. Practicing in front of family and friends is a great way to work on overcoming their fears. Mr. Nick understands the anxiety that comes with performing live. He works with students throughout the year to utilize mental and physical techniques to overcome these fears.
Recital Etiquette
With children being involved in so many activities these days it can be difficult to keep track of all the rules and regulations. What's nice is that piano is pretty straight forward! However, here a few tips to help your first recital go smoothly.
-
Just like in any theater, we ask that you silence your phones.
-
Keep talking to a minimum. Piano concerts are generally quiet so if you feel that you may need to speak with someone often or leave the room with a small child, please sit close to the door in the back of the room.
-
Video recording and picture are allowed but please be sure that your flash is off and all media sounds are on silent.
-
All students are required to introduce themselves and their song before they perform. It is not customary to clap after this.
-
It is, however, customary to clap after the student is completely done with their piece. Sometimes it can be hard to tell when a piece has ended. A good rule of thumb is to simply wait till the performer has taken her/his hands off of the keys completely.
-
Try to wait till intermission before getting up. However, if this isn't possible, wait till the performer is completely done with their piece.
-
Please do not clap in the middle of a performers piece.
-
Please do not scream out names, holler, or "whoop."
-
Understand that all students are in the same boat. They are all learning to become better than they were the time before. Mistakes happen and that's okay! We want rectal to be a positive and fun experience. Please be supportive and respectful of all students who have worked so hard to get where they are.
